Rising Above Wrestling Earns 501(c)(3) Status —

And a Bigger Future

Some milestones don’t come with much noise.

No packed gym. No final whistle. No banner hanging from the rafters.

Just a confirmation email and a line of text that quietly changes everything.

This week, Rising Above Wrestling officially received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit status.

On the surface, it’s a legal designation. Behind the scenes, it’s a turning point that gives the organization something it has never fully had before: stability.

And stability is what allows a mission to grow.

From the beginning, Rising Above Wrestling was built on a simple idea, use wrestling as a tool to change lives. The sport gets kids in the door, but what happens next is what matters most. They learn discipline. They learn resilience. They learn how to work through adversity and hold themselves accountable. Just as important, they gain coaches and mentors who know their names and expect more from them.

For many kids, that consistency is rare. A few nights a week in the gym can become the most structured, supportive part of their lives.

That’s the real purpose of the program.

Not trophies. Not records.

Opportunity.

Until now, Rising Above Wrestling has grown the way many grassroots programs do, through effort and heart. Volunteers donating time. Families stepping up. Community members pitching in where they can. It worked, but it also meant living season to season, always stretching resources and hoping the numbers lined up.

There were bigger plans, but limited capacity.

Transportation for kids without rides.
Study halls before practice.
Meals or snacks after school.
More training nights.
Better equipment.
Year-round mentorship.

All necessary. All possible. Just difficult to guarantee without consistent funding.

That’s where 501(c)(3) status makes a practical difference.

It allows donations to be tax-deductible, making it easier for individuals and businesses to give. It opens the door to grants and foundation support that specifically fund youth development. It creates credibility with partners and sponsors. Most importantly, it gives the organization the ability to plan long term instead of just getting through the next season.

Instead of asking, “Can we afford this right now?” the question becomes, “How big should we build this?”

That’s a powerful shift.

Because kids don’t need temporary programs. They need programs they can count on.

With this foundation in place, Rising Above Wrestling can fully pursue the vision it has talked about from day one, supporting the whole child, not just the athlete. Wrestling paired with academics. Mentorship alongside competition. Structure, guidance, and opportunity all under one roof.

The goal is to help young people leave the mat stronger not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.

And while the work starts locally, it doesn’t end there.

The challenges faced by families in Rochester aren’t unique. Cities across the country face the same gaps in access and support for youth. Now, with a formal nonprofit structure, Rising Above Wrestling has the ability to grow responsibly and replicate what works in other underserved communities.

Start small. Build it right. Prove the model. Then expand.

This week’s milestone doesn’t change who Rising Above Wrestling is. It simply strengthens its footing.

The mission is the same as it’s always been: get kids off the streets and onto the mat, surround them with mentors, and help them rise above whatever challenges stand in their way.

The difference now is simple.

We’re built to do it for the long haul.
